Capturing Events!

Introducing: The Event! Command. Keep track of what happened and when.

Use the Event! command to keep track of any time-based note.

When you send a text to Tap you can optionally include an Event! by prefixing any word or emoji with an exclamation point (!). That Event! will then be placed on a timeline, which you can view on the Tap interface.

Use the Event! to understand how you spend your time, to understand the patterns you experience in your life — or whatever else you can think of.

For example: Say I’m trying to figure out what triggers headaches. First I need to send an Event! to Tap every time I get a headache (not often, but it happens), I’ll use (!🙉) you can use whatever emoji or word you want, there is nothing special about the 🙉 symbol, to me it will represent a headache.

Anyway, I have a few ideas what the trigger could be, I’ll also assign those things a symbol (again, they can be whatever makes sense to you): lack of sleep (!💭), skipping a meal (!🤷), sugar overload (!🤢). Whenever I experience one of those things I’ll send the corresponding Event! to Tap via text message.

The next time I encounter a headache, I look back on my timeline to see if I’ve recently experienced one of the triggers.

That is useful enough, but suppose I forget to record the trigger Event!. The solution to that is Spell. A Spell is a text reminder. You can set one up to text you in the morning that asks whether or not you had a good night sleep, simply respond with !💭 if the answer is “no”. You could set up additional Spells to prompt you at different points in the day to help remember other events also.

Maybe you are a  farmer, and you want to track how your plants respond to a new feeding or watering schedule.

Maybe you are living with a chronic illness and need to track your symptoms and treatments.

Because the Event! function allows you to use any symbols or words to keep track of any time-based notes, you are free to come up with any system that makes sense for you!

Event! commands function on a few simple rules:

  • First, they must start with a ”!”, for example “!did”
  • Second, They cannot contain spaces.
  • Last, after the ”!” they must contain alpha-numeric characters, emojis, ”_” or ”-”

You can put them anywhere in a text, beginning, middle or end. Multiple Event!s can be included in a single note.

As always, Tap is not interested in mining your data or understanding your system. In fact, our approach is quite the opposite. TAP supports thinking differently. We want to provide the tools to help you build something uniquely useful to you.
